FAQs
Find answers to all your questions about joining the Celtic CrossFit community, our classes, and what to expect on your fitness journey with us.
What is CrossFit?
CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program built around constantly varied, functional movements performed at high intensity.
At Celtic CrossFit in Newport, that means a mix of weightlifting, gymnastics, and cardiovascular work, programmed to build genuine, well-rounded fitness rather than training for just one thing.
Every session is coached, and every movement is scaled to your ability, so whether you're brand new or a competitive athlete, you're doing the same workout adjusted to what's right for you. It's this combination of intensity, variety, and coaching that makes CrossFit different from a standard gym session.
Is CrossFit for me?
Yes. We have members training with us aged 5 to 70, spanning every fitness level from complete beginners to competitive athletes, all training together in the same sessions.
Every workout is scaled to your ability, so a first-timer and a ten-year member can be in the same class doing the same movements, just adjusted in weight, range, or intensity. If you've ever worried that CrossFit is only for people who are "already fit," that's a common misconception.
You don't need any fitness background to start. Our coaches are there to meet you exactly where you are.
Do I need to be in shape to start CrossFit?
Get StartedNo, and this is one of the biggest myths about CrossFit. You don't need to be fit to start, you get fit by starting. Every workout at Celtic is fully scalable, meaning the load, movement, and intensity are adjusted to your current ability on day one.
Our 6-Week Intro Course and 1:1 On-Ramp are both specifically designed for complete beginners, teaching the fundamental movements in a supportive, small-group or one-to-one setting before you join regular classes.
Whatever your starting point, our coaches will meet you there and help you build from it.
How much does it cost?
Membership pricing depends on how often you want to train, with options ranging from a 2-day-per-week plan through to unlimited access, plus annual, monthly, drop-in, and junior memberships. Our 6-Week Intro Course and 1:1 On-Ramp are priced separately as one-off beginner packages. Full pricing details for all membership types are on our Membership & Pricing page, and a small processing fee applies to all listed prices.
If you're not sure which option suits you best, get in touch and we're happy to help you find the right fit for your goals and budget.
What classes do you offer?
- CrossFit – Your typical CrossFit style workout, strength/skills coupled with conditioning!
- Conditioning – Stripping it back to bodyweight / smaller equipment, this is about moving well, fast and working hard!
- Celtic Weightlifting – Focused solely on building strength and technique on the Olympic Lifts – Great for beginners as well as seasoned lifters!
- Swole – Classic bodybuilding style session!
- Sweatfest – Generally a longer, team/pairs focused CrossFit session – depending on what the coach writes up on the day!
Is CrossFit safe for beginners?
Yes. Every class is coached, and every movement is scaled to your current ability, so beginners are never expected to lift the same weight or move at the same intensity as more experienced members.
Our 6-Week Intro Course and 1:1 On-Ramp both exist specifically to teach the fundamental movements (squatting, pressing, deadlifts, cleans, and basic gymnastics) properly and safely before you join regular classes.
Our coaches are experienced in working with complete beginners and will always prioritize good movement and safety over speed or intensity, especially in your first few weeks.
How do I get started at Celtic CrossFit?
The easiest way in is our 6-Week Intro Course, which starts with three small-group sessions covering the fundamentals before you move into regular classes.
If you'd prefer a faster, more private route, our 1:1 On-Ramp covers the same fundamentals one-to-one with a coach and can be completed in as little as one to two weeks.
Both options are designed for complete beginners, no experience or fitness background needed. Talk to a coach to find out which route suits you best, or check our schedule to see upcoming intro course dates.
What should I wear to my first CrossFit class?
Comfortable training clothes and trainers you can move freely in are all you need. Many members wear flat-soled training shoes or cross-trainers, since these give good stability for lifting, though regular trainers are absolutely fine to start with.
You don't need to buy any specialist CrossFit equipment before your first session, everything you need (barbells, plates, and other kit) is provided at the gym.
Just bring water, a positive attitude, and let your coach know if you have any injuries or concerns beforehand so they can adjust your session accordingly.
